Plastic Surgery

What is Plastic Surgery?
Plastic Surgery is a branch of surgery that involves reconstructive surgery and aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery.

The term ‘Plastic’ as in Plastic Surgery is derived from the Greek verb platho which means ‘to mould’.

Plastic Surgery is therefore surgery which results in a change to form (appearance) or function.

The reconstructive aspect of Plastic Surgery aims to restore form or function following injuries and cancers and includes operations such as breast reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer. This is the area of Plastic Surgery routinely offered by the NHS.
